A MAN has been jailed indefinitely after admitting killing a woman who died after being found collapsed in the street.

Richard Ciborowski, 32, was sentenced at Preston Crown Court for the manslaughter of Debbie Ryan, with whom he had been having an on-off relationship.

Sentencing Ciborowski, Judge Anthony Russell QC said the crime was “as bad a case of its kind I have seen presented before the court”.

Miss Ryan, 40, was found lying on the floor with serious head injuries at the junction of Pall Mall and Tootell Street in Chorley on the evening of March 30 last year.

She died in hospital four days later.

Pathology reports indicated that Miss Ryan sustained a heavy blow to the head causing severe brain trauma.

Fragments of glass from a broken vodka bottle were found in her hair and clothing and also on Ciborowski.

Prosecuting, QC Louise Blackwell said Miss Ryan and Ciborowski had been in a relationship for around a year and led an erratic lifestyle, blighted by alcohol and illicit drugs.

She detailed a catalogue of allegations of violence perpetrated Ciborowski against Miss Ryan in the period leading up to her death.

She said: “Statements taken from Miss Ryan’s daughter Danielle, said her mother told her he had punched her, stabbed her in the cheek with a pen, bitten her ears and encouraged his Staffordshire Bull terrier dog to bite her.”

On three occasions in January 2010, police were called to Miss Ryan’s Pall Mall home after allegations of domestic violence were made against Ciborowski.

On one occasion he was remanded in custody for breach of bail but was released after Miss Ryan retracted her statement.

Miss Ryan was the mother of Danielle, 21, and Chloe, 19, grandmother to four, Chelsea, Kaden, Kacey and Morgan and sister to Jimmy, Anthony, Shaun and Lisa.

A statement from Miss Ryan’s mother, Linda, was read to the court.

It said: “She was wonderful, daughter, sister, mother, grandmother and friend to all.

“Being beside her as she took her last breath will be with us all forever.”

Cibowowski had a string of convictions for violence and dishonesty dating back to 1998.

Her brother Jimmy, 45, said he was pleased with the gravity of the sentence.

“That monster has had a devastating effect on our family. We hope he’s locked up for many years,” he said.

Ciborowsk was told he would only be eligible to apply for parole after five years.

Before being considered for release he would have to show that he was no longer a danger to the public.

Detective Superintendent Ian Critchley who led the investigation said: “This is a tragic case where domestic violence has escalated and resulted in Deborah being killed.

“During their relationship Ciborowski attacked Deborah on a number of separate occasions, until his violent actions finally killed her.

"The court heard he has also been violent to other partners in the past.

“This tragedy only serves to reinforce the fact of how serious domestic violence is.”
