Parts of East Lancashire bus lane scheme to be revived

EAST Lancashire’s shelved multi-million pound bus lane scheme could be back on in revised form – minus the bus lane.

Transport chiefs are in talks with the Government over reviving Pennine Reach after a council leader admitted in October the proposal was ‘dead’ following a snub by ministers.

The scheme was originally budgeted at £50million and was designed to link Darwen, Blackburn and Hyndburn via a high-speed bus lane together with new or improved bus stations.

Bosses from Lancashire County Council and Blackburn with Darwen Council have now admitted the controversial lane looks set to be dropped to concentrate on improving bus stations and ticketing.

Blackburn with Darwen Council chief executive Graham Burgess said: “There’s a chance to put a revised scheme forward and that would not be the original Pennine Reach, but would be made up of some of the parts of Pennine Reach.

“For example, it may not have a bus lane and that might make it less controversial.”

County council transport chief Coun Tim Ashton said: “The Government has come to us and said they will support the scheme but not for quite as much money as before.

“Why would we say no to that?”

The scheme may now be worth £40 million – £10million less than before, said Coun Ashton.

It is understood that instead, the revised Pennine Reach could concentrate on improvements to bus stations in Blackburn and Accrington, and bus provision near Blackburn College.

Hyndburn MP Graham Jones, who is also a county councillor, said bosses should use the opportunity to introduce ‘smart cards’ for bus travellers similar to pre-loaded Oyster cards used on the London Under-ground.

He said: “I don’t understand why people would not want it to happen.

“Lancashire County Council still wants it to happen.”

This scheme is the most ill concieved idea that looks like it may be forced on the public, who dont want it, when are the mps going to realise not all people subscribe to the great green con, of carbon emission blackmail. we dont need this scheme as not many people want to use buses. the money could be spent on many other projects that are more desperately needed.

I've had to use the bus a couple of days this week due to my car being out of use.

I've been charged different prices both days from the same stop, I've had to sit next to grubby smelly people on over packed buses and spent 40 mins sat on Blackburn Boulevard on Saturday after the bus driver just got off the bus and walked off on two busses! Even the inspectors wandering round the boulevard had no idea what was going on with the 12 buses sat empty.

The bus system is a shambles. Tt won't be fixed just by having money pumped in and I have no plans to use the buses again after this weeks experience

Hang on. What people objected to - at least here in Darwen - was the one way bus lane into Blackburn for which there was not enough room on most parts of the A666 anyway.

If they are talking about a scheme to improve bus services without the bus lane (which was a major cost, as I understand it) then great.

Speaking as someone who mainly drives, we need to do something about the increasing amounts of congestion. If all the people who currently use the bus used cars instead the queues would be much longer. I don't use buses much because they are not reliable.

I for one hope that Blackburn can secure the investment needed to build a modern new bus station as the current one is not fit for purpose. I think the bus lane scheme was never going to provide value for money so apart from the money already wasted on the idea I'm glad that's not going to happen. In so far as the previous comments by Scooby are concerned they are pathetic. How anyone can call something a shambles when they have only used it a couple of times and during one of the worst periods of extreme weather we have had for some time is beyond me. I use the buses quite a bit and whilst they are far from perfect they are nowhere near as bad as you make out. As for sitting next to grubby smelly people, I am sorry us mere mortals don't live up to your uber-clean standards. Don't worry though because now you have the car back you can slip into those heated seats and be cocooned in pure luxury without having to tolerate us luddites.

bus provision near Blackburn college? where for goodness sake there isn't room despite destroying established trees lining the route for the traffic that currently needs to use this weird one way madness and whilst BwD is talking about no sacred cows even in services to disabled people with support needs we are supposed to breathe a sigh of relief and say "oh £40 quid phew that's okay then"

Drivers who haven't even got the courtesy to say " Excuse me, I'm going for a break, please move to the next bus" but instead leave people sat waiting clueless for 30 mins, without even the supervising inspectors knowing what's happening is pretty much a shambles. I really hope you don't think that's an acceptable way to run a bus service??

What a snob! I use the bus service on a regular basis. My only complaints relate to personal hi-fi users and mobile phone users. Yes occasionally you do get people who do have a lower standard of hygiene, however, it generally is the more older passenger, possibly a little confused and currently struggling to heat one room. Wouldn't it be nice if they could live in fully central heated properties and bathe daily. Hang your head in shame Scooby.

I can think of better ways to spend £50m than making the trip to the pound shop faster!!! Bus lanes are a massive pain in the backside. They just create more congestion for cars. When will the Government realise that people won't get out of their cars and use buses? I would rather sit in a traffic jam in my nice warm clean car than stand waiting in the cold for a bus full of peasants!!! I hated it when I was a kid getting the bus into town, especially when someone who stank of alcohol or someone with poor hygiene sat next to me. Buses and tube in London is essential, buses around here are just peasant carriers!!! Harsh but true!!!
