BEDFORD Methodist Church is about to expand.
After a lot of hard work over the past four years and generous grants from Viridor and the national methodist movement, the church in Breaston Avenue, Leigh, has now raised the funds to build an extension.
A new hall is planned which churchgoers intend to be used to spread the work of the church into the local community.
This project has been supported by Leigh MP Andy Burnham, local councillors, Wigan Council, police community support officers, and local organisations.
Building work will start early in 2011 and completion is expected next autumn.
On Sunday, December 19 at 3-30pm, before the 4pm carol service, the first sod will be cut by former minister the Rev Sue Whitehead, who was instrumental in the early planning of the extension.
Guests will include the future chairman of the Rochdale District of the Methodist Church, Rev. Paul Martin.
