Three women from Lancashire caught up in the delays at Manchester Airport were turning heads with their unusual clothing - jeans, trainers and wedding hats.

Katie Dodgson, Sue Dodgson and Megan Brady were flying out to a family wedding in Hungary and planned to take their hats on the plane as hand luggage.

But the upgraded airport security, coming after a suspected terrorist plot was foiled, meant they faced a stiff choice - squash their delicate hats into their suitcases or put them on.

Megan said: "We seem to be getting a lot of attention from everybody but at least we will be able to look smart for the wedding.

"Check-in took a long time and to be honest it was quite a scramble for everybody to try and get their hand luggage in their suitcases.

"One American lady was travelling with young son. He got quite upset as she was telling him he couldn't take any toys on the plane for the journey."

First stop for the trio, who all live in Lancaster, is Amsterdam.

From there they need to catch a connecting flight to Budapest, and then onto the wedding which is taking place two hours out of the capital.

Megan added: "As long as we can get to Amsterdam on time, we'll be fine.

"Any precaution that can be taken to safeguard us is welcome."
