CLITHEROE'S town centre streets will be a no-go area for motorists next Wednesday night as some of the country's top cyclists ride into town.

Access will be denied from 5pm to 11pm on August 2 due to the annual Clitheroe Cycling Grand Prix.

The event is part of the Elite Riders' National Championship organised by British Cycling and will see former world cycling champion, Olympian and Commonwealth Games medallist Chris Newton competing.

There will also be a family fun day running from noon to 4pm on the Clitheroe Castle field.

Ribble Valley Council's street scene manager, Graham Jagger, said:"We apologise for any inconvenience caused to town centre residences and disruption will be kept to a minimum.

"Clitheroe has been chosen as one of only 12 venues in the country to host a cycling grand prix.

"We expect it to attract thousands of spectators."
