Fewer jobs on offer at Accrington's new Tesco store

A NEW Tesco store has axed hundreds of jobs — before even opening its doors this month.

Hyndburn Borough Council’s leader has blasted the supermarket giant after just 191 posts were advertised for the new Accrington store.

Throughout the planning process, Tesco said the store would create 450 jobs and later pledged to target long-term unemployed Hyndburn residents for half these posts.

The supermarket giant, which has been inundated with 2,000 applications for the jobs, blamed the current economic climate.

Jobs have been given to 64 people classed as long-term unemployed, while a further 127 people have been recruited to work in the £32 million Eagle Street store.

Of those, 44 were Tesco employees transferred from the Nelson store which closed this summer.

Hyndburn Council’s leader Peter Britcliffe said: “The 191 jobs are welcome of course, but Tesco owes the council and the people of Hyndburn an explanation.”

A Tesco spokesperson said they hoped to create more jobs at the store “in time”.

She said: “Job numbers should rise once the store matures and trading increases.

"Despite having to cut back on predicted figures this is still one of the largest job creation developments in the district.

We are delighted to take on so many during the current economic climate, which we could never have predicted during the planning process.”

The store is due to open later this month.

Some people will believe all that is said, even implied.
.
Tesco cannot be trusted.

was there ever an intention to provide the jobs or was it just a cheap ploy to encourage planners to approve thier venture?

I also understand that there have been cuts at Burnley, albeit in terms of overtime rather than staff losses

The Nelson store has closed entirely so there is probably truth in what Tesco's are saying.

There is nothing more guaranteed to pull the wool over councillors eyes than the prospect of being able to boast about how many new jobs they are bringing to the area. Tesco and other organisations know this all too well so when they want planning permission they 'massage' the numbers.

I don't really blame Tesco they are going to have a battle on there hands fighting ASDA so my guess is save everything that can be saved to throw into the fight.

I'd read a book called Tescopoly before you believe what the company is saying. And yes it does seem what Tesco wants, Tesco gets.
The new jobs is good for the town in the short term but long term, small businesses are going to close. These businesses did keep the money in the town. The money that Tesco will make will go to shareholders and then on investment on other new stores out of the area. Sooner or later less staff will be needed because automatic checkouts will be used. Of course, these people who have been made redundant cant go to find shop work because Tesco has killed all competition!!! Think about it folks, who is the real winner here?

couldnt have put it better myself.as for the automatic checkouts they can keep them i would sooner queue and keep a cashier in work.they have now introduced some of these at the kfc in charnock richard services, and from what iv seen the people that use them tend to be served quicker because they are directed to a different collection point.all i can say is the selfish gits should be looking at the bigger picture.stop pushing in and stop putting people on the dole.

And then there is the scandal of the amount of jobs that they were allegedly going to create and how that amount has been drastically reduced. Tesco know that they can change these numbers and greatly reduce what they initially claim because they are well aware that the council cannot afford to pursue the matter in the courts.

I stopped shopping at Tesco 3 years ago. Tesco in Ramsbottom is eerily quiet, while Morrison's is very busy. Hopefully, that's an omen of things to come ...

Tesco's in Rammy is one of those Metro\Express ones as opposed to Morrisons which is larger. Tesco is just there to have a presence so i wouldn't take that as an omen. Tesco in Bury is very busy

All I'm going to say is this: NEW stores have more staff than a mature store. They have an extra budget to cover opening of new stores. Then with folk being either temp or leaving of their own accord in the first year these posts are never refilled. Stores get about 3 years before they become mature stores. So in 3 years times, their will be less employed there.

Can any one tell me how many of those jobs are actually full-time with all that a full-time job entails IE holiday pay and sick pay?
