A BURNLEY councillor has resigned from the Liberal Democrats after growing ‘disillusioned’ with the party.

Queensgate Coun Arif Khan, who was elected in 2007, said he had left the borough’s ruling party to join the local Labour contingent.

Coun Khan, said he made the decision after being ‘deeply disappointed’ by the Lib Dems’ performance, both nationally and locally.

He said: “I feel betrayed by the party’s U-turn on its policies and the uncompromising support for the Conservative party.

“I am disillusioned by the coalition Government’s proposed actions and feel they will hit the poorest and most vulnerable very hard.”

But Lib Dem Coun Darren Reynolds said Coun Khan had been unhappy since a bid to chair a committee failed in April.
