Superman has never been one of my favourite heroes - give me the more multi-dimensional Batman or Spiderman any day.

But despite some weaknesses, this latest version is worth donning your cape and flying down to the cinema for.

If you had not guessed by the title, this film sees Superman returning to earth after a few years away of finding himself'.

But by now Lois Lane has her own family and the world has moved on without him.

There are love triangles, sexual frustration and evil schemes ahoy.

The special effects of the films were visually amazing - enough to make you believe that you were actually soaring through the clouds with Superman.

But while there seems to be have been plenty of cash spent on the effects, the same can't be said for the script, with most of the one-liners falling flat.

There were a few surprises in the plot, though, and one in particular that happily caught me off guard.

Kevin Spacey as Lex Luther was an excellent choice, with Spacey giving him all the right ingredients - cold, calculating, cultured and of course quite insane.

In fact I liked him more than Brandon Routh who plays Superman, who neverthless established a nice difference personality-wise between Clark Kent and his alter ego Superman.

Kate Bosworth was a superb Lois Lane, believable and feisty if only a little predictable.

I saw the film at the IMAX screen in Manchester, complete with those novelty glasses, which excited the child in me.

However, be warned the whole film isn't in 3D - look out for the flashing spectacles symbol telling you when to slip them on.
