Holocaust victim's memory will live on in East Lancashire

THE memory of teenage war victim Anne Frank is to live on in East Lancashire through the planting of symbolic trees.

Residents in Burnley and Blackburn will have the chance to suggest locations to plant chestnut trees, which brought her comfort as she hid from the Nazis in an Amsterdam attic during the Second World War.

The idea is part of a youth-led public exhibition by The Anne Frank Trust UK, which will spend a week in the Exchange Arcade, Blackburn, from today, before moving to Burnley at the end of the month.

Called ‘Take A Stand’, it aims to encourage people to read Anne’s diary, and engage with creative voluntary activities.

The chestnut tree is mentioned in her diary, which became a worldwide best-seller after her death in a concentration camp in 1945, aged just 15.

“From my favou-rite spot on the floor I look up at the blue sky and the bare chestnut tree, on whose branches little raindrops shine, appear-ing like silver,” she wrote in her dairy on Febr-uary 23, 1944.

Last month, the 150-year-old tree toppled over in strong winds and had to be cut down.

A sapling will be planted at Batsford Arboretum, near Gloucester, on September 25.

Executive director Gillian Walnes said: “We are now asking people to keep Anne’s hopes and dreams alive by planting a tree to symbolically replace this special tree that has just been lost to the world.

“Anne Frank trees also honour and memorialise the millions of children like Anne who have died as a result of persecution, conflict and inhumanity,” she added.

The work in East Lancashire comes after the Trust screened a film about Anne Frank, and political activism, at the Burnley and Pendle Faith Centre, at Thomas Whitham Sixth Form, in June.

What a fantastic idea. The trees will remind everyone of what happens when good people stand aside and do nothing. The" New Labour" government allowed book burning, and legislation that allowed U.K subjects to be abused and murdered by religious (fascist) fanatics. "New Labour" stood aside and allowed the rape of young UK children. If Anne Frank lived in the U.K. today she would be at risk of abduction, rape and possibly death from "other disgraceful well known sources". Of course the "New Labour" project would have stood by gazing at their navels and talking about appeasement. "God Bless" Ann Frank and all the children in the U/K/. who currently being raped, abused and killed. These children are also being used as a weapon of "WAR"

Hey Latin leper, can I borrow your brain, I'm building an idiot.

The soft get's come on here at 1:12 in the morning to shoehorn a moronic comment on Labour in a story about Anne Frank! Does anyone live a more pathetic life than that? Does He think there's a prize for stupidity? If so, there's only the criminally insane Tetley Dribbler who could run him close.

Get a life, you sad sack of she-ite.

Hic puer est stultissimus omnium!

"the latin leper" - fantastic

I am sure that nobody wishes for a repeat of the evil acts the Nazi's did and if this is one of many gestures which can make us pause before we act against another person ( the BNP remind us of this), then it is worth every penny.

Only a real lowlife would use an article on Anne Frank to write political drivel about a party thats not even in power , and does he think that anyone is impressed that he uses some words of gibberish ? He really is a Baboons testicle sac . Great idea about the tree planting ,it must never be forgotten what the nazis stood for or what they were able to do under a dictatorship ,so that hopefully the world will stand up to dictators such as Hitler,Stalin,Sadaam etc. and if planting trees stands as a reminder ,thats got to be good surely .
