A 56-YEAR-OLD man has died after a suspected assault in Blackburn.
Paramedics had been called to Rockmount flats in Adelaide Terrace and took an unnamed man to the Royal Blackburn Hospital, where his condition deteriorated.
Staff at the hospital contacted the police to say the death could have been as a result of an assault.
It is understood the victim may have suffered some kind of head injury.
Two men arrested on suspicion of grevious bodily harm with intent have been released on bail by police.
The victim had previously been living at Bramwell House - a hostel run by the Salvation Army in Blackburn - but had moved out some time ago.
Residents in the street said he had been visiting the flats.
Yesterday, a police officer was on patrol at the large converted house, which neighbours said was home to up to 18 renters.
One resident, who asked not to be named, said they had found out about the death following a lot of police activity on Thursday night.
He said: “There was a lot of police and blue lights. I had no idea something like this had gone on.
“Quite a few people live in the flats, but not many round here know who comes and goes.”
Another resident said: “It’s a shame. We didn’t know the man, but we’ve heard he had come over for some drinks with a friend.”
Police have spoken to the landlord of the flats and have been examining CCTV footage from the area.
A police spokesman said: “Police were contacted by staff at the Royal Blackburn Hospital at just after 7pm on Thursday to say a man had died and could have been the victim of an assault.
“Enquiries commenced and it was established the man was found by the ambulance service at an address in Adelaide Terrace.
A post-mortem examination carried out last night proved inconclusive. Further tests will now be carried out in an attempt to establish how the man died.
