NELSON and Colne College has been recognised as one of the best learning centres in the country by being awarded the prestigious Beacon Status.

The college was just one of a handful of further education colleges in the country to get the title at a ceremony in London.

Only the best-performing colleges in the country qualify for Beacon Status and they have to demonstrate good performance in education and training.

Application is by invitation from the Minister of State for Lifelong Learning, Further and Higher Education only.

Last year Nelson and Colne College was judged as outstanding' in an Ofsted report which praised its good pass rates, teaching and support for students.

Today principal Alison Birkinshaw said: "We are delighted to have been awarded this top accolade. It is further recognition of the college's significant achievements and this status acknowledges the hard work and commitment of our staff and students."

She added: "Beacon College status confirms we are one of the best colleges in the country."

Pendle MP Gordon Prentice said: "This is a well deserved award, following on from the college's excellent Ofsted inspection result last year.

"Learning and Skills Beacon status was awarded to only 14 out of the many hundreds of colleges and training institutions across the country this year.

"It recognises all-round excellence in teaching and management."

The MP added: "It is gratifying that Pendle teenagers looking to go on to post-16 education or training can be sure that they have one of the best learning providers in the country right on their doorstep.

"I congratulate Dr Birkinshaw and all her staff on this achievement."
