PADIHAM councillor Marcus Johnstone has pledged to oppose any closure of the town's fire station.

Lancashire Fire Authority is currently carrying out a review of fire cover throughout the county including whether the retained station in Padiham should be kept.

Coun Johnstone is making the promise to fight any closure after rumours spread in the town that the station could be under threat.

Coun Johnstone said: "I have already made it crystal clear to the chairman of the fire authority that any closure proposals for Padiham Fire Station are totally unacceptable.

"I really hope we do not have to fight a campaign when the review proposals come out in August, but if we do then so be it.

"I am not spoiling for a fight, but the people of Padiham know that I will always speak up for them and fight on their behalf if necessary."

He added: "Because of the fire authority's independent status I have no direct influence over it. But I am in a position to lobby its members on issues of local concern. I will, of course, not hesitate to do this on behalf of the people of Padiham."

A spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: "There is a review ongoing which will have an impact in some areas, but it would be inappropriate at this stage to comment on any specific proposals within the report."

An announcement on the fire authority's plans, including proposals for fire stations throughout East Lancashire, the number of fire engines at each station and numbers of fire crew, is expected next week.
