SECURITY is not an issue at the site where a boy fell 30ft from a rooftop, according to the construction company managing its redevelopment.

The former Broughton Congrove buildings, in Accrington, are to be demolished in two weeks time to make way for a new health centre. The derelict mill is boarded up to prevent the public gaining access.

On Tuesday evening Jake Frankland, 11, of Stanley Street, fell through a plastic lighting panel after climbing onto the roof with a friend. Jake suffered a broken arm.

The building company carrying out work at the mill denies that the boys got in through an unsecured gate Peter Forrest, of Eric Wright Construction Ltd, said: "The site was left secure, with locks on the gates, and there are no signs of any holes in the fences. There are also clear signs warning people not to enter the property."

He added: "We will be investigating the matter and ensuring that the site is still secure. This is an unfortunate incident, but it is an example of why young people should not play on building sites."

The property, at the corner of Paradise Street and Church Street, has been vacant for almost two years.

A spokesman for Hyndburn Council said: "We have not received an official complaint yet, but when we do we will decide if Environmental Services need to investigate, or if the matter needs to be passed to the Health and Safety Executive."
