18 boozed-up kids taken off Burnley's streets by police

More stories about: Operation Staysafe

BOOZING children as young as 12 were taken off the streets of Burnley and Padiham during a police operation.

Eighteen teenagers, aged between 12 and 16, were found roaming the streets and parks in a drunken state.

They were taken to the Sure Start Centre, in Tay Street, where they were seen by health workers and social services, before their parents were called to collect them.

Sgt Claire Pearson, from the Burnley Community Safety Part-nership, said that youngsters were putting themselves and others at risk by getting drunk.

She said: “The vast majority of our local young people are sensible and law abiding and it’s really important not to forget that.

“However, there is a small minority of youths who purposely go out and drink to excess and that is something that we’re not prepared to tolerate because they are putting themselves and others at risk.

The crackdown, dubbed Operation Staysafe, is run in the borough several times a year.

As well as taking in the 18 teenagers, officers also spoke to over 100 youths in the area to warn them about excess boozing.

The latest operation last Friday also saw six teenagers given fixed penalty notices for disorder after damaging property.

After being given a drink of water and allowed to ‘dry out’ at the centre, the youths are spoken to by social services.

As well as protecting their own safety the operation also helps with reducing anti-social behaviour.

Sgt Pearson said: “I hope the weekend’s operation has sent a clear message to young people.”

"before their parents were called to collect them. "

And then what? What happened when their parents came to collect them? Was it like a school pick-up with lots of friendly smiles?

Did the parents get invited to have a drink also? I expect some probably brought drinks with them.

Stop the parents' benefits until they decide to start acting like parents. These kids are YOUR scum - YOU made them - YOU deal with them.

It's outragous to call these children 'scum'. Think back to when you were 16 - didn't you attempt to sneak off and get drunk? I certainly did and my parents thought I was at my mates house listening to records (that dates me!). It's great that they are being told to think about the consequences.
My parents weren't 'scum' either, they would have been horrified if they knew!
These days children see crowds of people stood outside pubs drinking while they have a fag - it's the adults who should be thinking about the consequences of the example they are setting, not the children who should be getting the blame.
If it was my son who was caught I'd be pleased that someone had told be so that I could do something about it.

At 9.30am I watched a man stagger out of a pub in the centre of Burnley, be sick on the pavement and then stagger back in for more to drink! Children learn from what they see adults do.

How do you know your son and his friend were included in the "18"? Perhaps the figure for children removed for anti social behaviour was higher?

Is your Caps Lock key broken? Or are you simply TRYING TO SHOUT! Either way its shocking to hear that children as young as 12 were being taken off the streets.
.
I can surely tell you were a booze guzzling monkey back in the day simply by attempting to read your horrendous post. Also DRANK isn't a word, or it might be in your boozy mind! Here's a tip, save up and buy a dictionary.
