A WOMAN had to be pulled from the water at a Bury beauty spot after she attempted to save her pet dog from drowning.
She plunged into the canal feeder at Burrs Country Park on Woodhill Road after watching in horror as her Staffordshire bull terrier disappeared below the surface.
After being hauled to safety, the woman phoned her husband who raced to the scene. But the couple were unable to save the dog which was later recovered from the water by a special fire brigade inshore rescue boat from Heywood.
Fire officers believe that algae on top of the surface of the canal feeder may have given a misleading impression of the true depth of the water.
Watch commander Steve Wilcock, of Bury fire station, said: “The lady tried to drag the dog out of the water from a position where it was deeper, probably between 7ft and 8ft. She started to go under and began to splash about in panic.”
Passers-by in the park were alerted to her plight and a woman helped pull the distraught owner from the water.
Mr Wilcock added: “Any dog walkers in this area should be mindful of keeping their pets on a lead. They must accept that there can be elements of risk where pets are concerned.”
Three fire crews were at the scene for around 30 minutes during the incident which happened at 5.30pm on Friday.
