A REVIEW into Burnley General Hospital’s Urgent Care Centre has produced 23 key recommendations.
Health chiefs meet in Manchester this morning to discuss the findings of the report.
The review found that Burnley could deal with more cases but the overall decision to treat the most urgent A&E cases in Blackburn was the right one.
The review was led by Professor Matthew Cooke, the national director for emergency and urgent care, and Dr Irving Cobden, medical director at Cumbria Primary Care Trust.
In a joint statement hospital campaigners Peter Pike and Ian Wooolley said: "Professor Cooke and Dr Cobden have produced an invaluable report.
"And we hope all 23 recommendations are given the immediate attention they deserve.
"This will lead to a better service at almost the same cost.
"There will be significantly more local care if the proposals are implemented.
"There should be a sensible reduction in unnecessary cases being sent to Blackburn when they could be dealt with in Burnley.
"This will build on the improved highly specialised A&E Care which has been achieved at Blackburn whilst at the same time making better use of the facilities that exist in Burnley."
