PRINCESS Anne urged users of Darwen Leisure Centre to maintain their ‘great enthusiasm’ for the venue today as she officially opened the new facility.

Crowds gathered in Green Street at lunchtime, eagerly anticipating the first royal visit to the town in 21 years.

Children from nearby Holy Trinity Primary School excitedly waved hand-made flags and clapped as the princess made her way into the centre to meet dignitaries, including MP Jake Berry and the Lord-Lieutenant of Lancashire.

Teacher Christine Leahy said: “They’ve been very excited about today, but I think they thought she’d be wearing tiaras and jewels!”

Her Royal Highness was given a guided tour of the £13million centre by manager Paul Gracey, and council officials, speaking with gym users and swimmers.

The tour was videoed by the Queen’s official videographer, and will appear on her YouTube channel.

Tommy Duckworth was seven when the old centre was opened.

Now 84, Tommy was given the chance to speak to the princess about his memories, and what he thinks of the new facilities.

He said: “When I was seven I didn’t get to talk to the Duke of Kent. I was kept away, but this time I spoke to the princess and I feel very privileged.

“It’s a fantastic facility for the town and great to have royality here.”

After unveiling a plaque, the princess signed the original visitors’ book from the 1933 baths opening, which also contained the signature of her great uncle, Prince George the Duke of Kent.

She said: “I am sure this is significantly different from its predecessor.

"You have done something that has added to the value of what has been done before.

"It is a great facility and I notice great enthusiasm and I certainly hope that will last.”

She was then presented with a posy by eight-year-old Ebony Leek, before making her way out to a waiting car.
