EXTRA police patrols will hit the streets of Lancashire towns again tonight in a bid to clamp down on violence during England’s game against Algeria.
Paramedics said reports of assaults in the North West increased by more than a third in the wake of England’s tense 1-1 draw with the USA last Saturday.
North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) officials said that the number of assault-related injuries rose by 34 per cent, and the total number of calls, compared to a normal Saturday night, increased by 15 per cent.
Police will continue to deploy extra patrols on the streets, while specialist hooligan spotters will also be out in plain clothes to keep an eye out for known trouble makers.
In addition, domestic violence specialists will be on standby ahead of an anticipated rise in cases.
Sergeant James Black said they were aiming to keep a lid on 'drunkenness, rowdiness and violence'.
