AFTER waiting three-and-a-half years, children will finally be able to enjoy a new playground in Whitehall Park this summer.

Work has started on the facility to replace what has been described as ‘disgraceful’ equipment previously on offer.

Funding worth £73,000 was secured from the National Lottery before Christmas and the Government’s Play Pathfinder scheme by the Pioneers of Play group and The Friends of Whitehall Park.

It was hoped to be open by February, but it has taken longer than expected to obtain the equipment and put the plans in place.

When complete, the play-ground will include new swings, and a new basket swing for all ages, multi-play unit, slide, picnic benches.

Fencing in the park is will be repainted, and work will be carried out on the entrance area.

It is hoped the playground will be open by the beginning of August.

June Ellison, from of Pioneers of Play, said: “The lads who are working on the site have made a cracking start.

“It’s going to be wonderful when it’s finished and all the children have been telling me they’re very excited. I’m confident it will be well worth the wait.”

Coun Trevor Maxfield, executive member for culture and leisure, said: “Whitehall Park is one of Darwen’s most beautiful parks and is very popular with residents and visitors.

“The park was in need of a facelift and the new play area should make it an even more attractive place to visit.

“Play equipment is very expensive but the council has been successful in securing funding from the Big Lottery”
