A STREET market to celebrate Clitheroe’s new status as the food capital of Lancashire will be held this summer.

Town chiefs are hosting the Clitheroe Fine Food and Craft Street Market as part of the fifth Pennine Lancashire Festival of Food and Culture, which runs from August 8 until September 16.

Ian Lloyd, president of Clitheroe Chamber of Trade, said: “The Clitheroe Fine Food and Craft Street Market aims to capitalise on all the local food heroes, food ambassadors and best local producers in Clitheroe and the surrounding areas.

“This is a high profile, traditional family street market event that will further promote and enhance Clitheroes’ image as a premier destination for fine food, superb local chefs and talent.

“This is a proud achievement for Clitheroe and a wonderful opportunity to showcase the very best that Clitheroe has to offer and the Fine Foods and Craft Street Market has the full support of the chamber members who are busy planning various activities and promotions around this very special event.”

The street market on Saturday, August 14 will be filled with an eclectic mix of the Ribble Valleys local producers, arts and crafts, vintage clothes, home wear stalls. Organisers said it would complement the existing market, which also runs on a Saturday.

There will also be interactive cookery demonstrations, a medieval re-enactment at The Clitheroe Castle and activities at The Platform Gallery and The Grand Venue.

Cliff Cowburn, owner of Cowman’s Butchers, said: “Clitheroe has long been home to good quality food and drink and generations of expertly skilled families work very hard to produce consistent quality, craftsmanship and distinctive tastes, flavours and foods.

“Our team at Cowman’s are busy creating a special sausage to launch at the Street Market and we will be taking part alongside a variety of famous local producers. It will be a great day out.”

There are few stalls remaining for businesses wishing to take part.
