PARKING restrictions could be brought in to stop problems in several streets near Burnley College and the UCLAN campus.

Parts of Rectory Road, Grosvenor Street, Holme Road, Cavour Street, and Ashley Street, look set to have limited waiting restrictions put in place.

The measures are due to be introduced by Lancashire County Council to improve safety, and access to residential and industrial premises in the streets.

But people living in the area are unhappy as they have to pay for a parking permit if a residents-only scheme is introduced.

A petition containing 26 signatures from residents of Rectory Road was sent to the council against the possible introduction of paid-for parking schemes.

Mark Terrell, 50, of Rectory Road, said: “Nobody on the street wants to pay to park in front of their house.

“They have just imposed all of this on us.”

Ajmal Hussain, 54, of Rectory Road, said: “We don’t want residents permits. We want free parking outside our homes.

“We are paying road tax, so why do we have to pay more. I have arthritis in my wrists so can’t carry shopping bags very far. I need to be able to park close to my house.

“We are proud the college is here, but they should be providing their own parking.”

Nasir Mahmood, 18, of Rectory Road, said: “Students arrive early in the morning and parking bec-omes a nightmare then.

“We live here, so we shouldn’t have to pay for parking on our street.”

Dave Bloomer, of the county council, said: “A series of meetings has been held with the college authorities and other interested parties to promote alternative transport modes to the college through the green travel plan which was a condition of the planning permission.

“Unfortunately, the problem of overspill parking still persists and it is considered by the county council’s traffic engineers, in consultation with the police, that action must be taken to improve safety, and access to residential and industrial premises in adjacent streets.”
