A TENANT drove her neighbours mad with her late night parties and loud music.

Deborah Kernaghan, of Sarah Street, Darwen, was warned several times about blasting out tracks from Lady Gaga and X Factor winner Alexandra Burke.

But council chiefs said she carried on regardless, with loud bass beats pounding out after 3am, so they had no choice but to seize her stereos and televisions.

Coun Alan Cottam, executive member for regeneration, said: “We hope that this action will send out a clear message to all people who behave irresponsibly and continue to cause noise nuisance to their neighbours: you will lose your equipment.

"It is regrettable that the council has to take such action but on this occasion a number of warnings were ignored.”

Officers from Blackburn with Darwen Council, with the help of the police, raided her home to seize a number of items including two televisions and two stereo units.

It follows a number of complaints, dating back to December 2008, from neighbours fed up with a ‘daily torment of loud music’ from the house where Deborah Kernaghan lived.

The tenant was warned by Environmental Health Officers that she was causing a disturbance to her neighbours when playing audible items, but council bosses said the advice was ignored.

An abatement notice was served but there were continued reports of disturbances.

Officers working on the night time noise service witnessed a breach of the notice and a decision was made to apply for a warrant to enter the premises and seize the equipment.

The tenant was given a number of further warnings about the problems but they were again ignored, according to council.

Sgt Mark Wilson of Lancashire Police added: “Seizing equipment is a last resort, but the well being of the public is paramount.

“People should be allowed to go about their daily business without music blaring out at all hours and if that does happen, you may have your music equipment seized.”

"This type of anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated and we support the council in this action.”
