A MUM and her three children undertook a mammoth 140-mile charity walk to Nelson, arriving just in time for a meal and hot shower.

Helen Lord-Scott and sons Sam, 11, Oliver, eight, and George, three, arrived at her mum and dad David and Vera Crewe's Hallam Road home after seven days on the road.

The former East Lancashire lass set off from her home in Kidderminster as part of her training in readiness for her trek to Mount Everest's base camp in February after the idea was suggested by Sam.

She said: "It was a big relief to arrive and the kids said they had no wish to do it again. I've done several walks before like the coast-to-coast and I knew we'd eventually get to the end but for them I think it always seemed a long way off.

"I think they did enjoy it though and they've done something most of their school friends have never done."

The challenge saw the foursome meander along canal tow paths for seven days, staying in hotels along the way at night.

And 41-year-old Helen, who went to Walton High School and Nelson College, said the area had changed since she left over 12 years ago.

She added: "It's changed so much. Walking along the canal was really difficult, where there used to be a mill there's now a Morrisons supermarket.

"It was strange but it was nice walking up to the front door, having a nice meal and a bath before heading back home."

The charity challenge has raised more than £700 for her Everest quest.

Grandmother Vera said: "The boys were quite keen, they were full of life when they arrived.

"We were delighted to see them. Her father decided to walk along the canal to meet them at Brierfield.

"You never know what she's going to do next."
