RESIDENTS of Nelson and Colne could have more of a voice on issues affecting them, as a review of local government in the area has been launched.

Pendle Council is considering setting up town councils and has begun a review of council arrangements.

Town and parish councils are the smallest tier of local government.

By law Pendle Council is required to carry out a review of its local government arrangements every 10 years and residents are urged to have their say if they want town councils introduced.

Councillor Tonia Barton, chairman of the scrutiny panel set up to lead the review said: "There's plenty of speculation about local government reorganisation, which could see Pendle Council abolished to become part of a much larger authority covering East Lancashire or even the whole of Lancashire.

"A strong network of town and parish councils in Pendle, including town Councils in Nelson and Colne, could help us to ensure our towns and villages have a stronger voice in local government.

Consultation ends on July 10. For details or to give views, contact Philip Mousdale, executive director community engagement on 01282 661634 or philip.mousdale@pendle.gov.uk
