A BURNLEY nursing student has been highly commended in a national awards ceremony.

Mike Jackson, from the University of Central Lancashire, has been highly commended in the Student Nursing category of the Nursing Standard Nurse of the Year Awards 2006.

He received his prize at a ceremony in central London.

Mike, who completed a BA (Hons) in Health Studies and Sociology and is now studying on the Adult Nursing course, has scoliosis or curvature of the spine.

On a recent clinical placement in a nursing home, Mike found his disabling condition helped him empathise with patients and says he is now asked for advice by people about taking control of their disabilities.

This is the 18th year of the Nurse of the Year Awards and Mike competed against more than 300 other nurses to receive his commendation.

Linda Thomas, Editor-in-Chief at Nursing Standard, said: "I would like to congratulate Mike for the great work he is doing. I think he will be a real asset to the nursing world."

Mike is currently on work placement at Burnley General Hospital.
