BLACKBURN MP and Foreign Secretary Jack Straw was allegedly spat at while out canvassing yesterday.

The incident happened at 3pm at the polling station at St Silas Church of England Primary School, St Silas Road, when a political opponent allegedly spat at the MP.

Mr Straw said: "There was no physical contact. He spat in my direction, I don't think it was designed to hit me.

"It was uncouth behaviour. I'm not taking it any further."

Dave Mallaby, Chief Superintendent and commander for Eastern Division, confirmed that police had looked into the matter.

He added: "Somebody spat at him, but he's not made a complaint and that's the end of the matter as far as we are concerned."
