POLICE said today they were set to make an arrest in connection with a "happy slap" attack in Burnley.

Officers said they were confident they knew the identity of one of the offenders who set upon the 12-year-old boy in Church Street.

The victim, a pupil at St Theodore's High School, was approached by youths outside the Dixie Chicken takeaway.

Police said he was slapped repeatedly on the head by one boy while another recorded the assault on his mobile phone.

Police said the thugs involved in the attack were pupils at Towneley High School, which has promised to co-operate fully with the police investigation Insp Damian Darcy said: "We are confident we know the identity of at least one of the offenders and we will be working with the school to bring those responsible to justice."

The attack is believed to be the first of its kind in Burnley.
