A BLACKBURN poultry owner has immunised his chickens against bird flu after residents reported dead birds in the area.

The 13-year-old pupil at Blakewater College, keeps chickens on an allotment owned by a Danny Johnson, next to Wensley Road.

Yesterday a vet was called to immunise the birds against avian influenza (bird flu) as a "precautionary measure".

Concerned residents also reported seeing a number of dead wild birds, including pigeons and starlings in Wensley Road in the last month and believed officials from the Department for the Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) had been alerted.

DEFRA spokesman William Mack said: "We are getting reports from all over the country of birds dying and have local teams who respond to.

"However at this stage we can confirm that there are no positive cases of avian influenza in Blackburn that have been reported to us and we would be the first to know."
