VIP invite for Blackburn Rovers-mad Doctor Who star

VIP invite for Blackburn Rovers-mad Doctor Who VIP invite for Blackburn Rovers-mad Doctor Who

NEW Doctor Who Matt Smith has been invited to Ewood Park as a VIP guest after revealing he is a Blackburn Rovers fan.

And club bosses have even pledged to reserve a parking space for his Tardis!

Smith revealed his affiliation this week during a whirlwind publicity tour across the country ahead of his debut on BBC1 tomorrow.

His dad David was brought up in Darwen, and during one interview revealed he has an auntie still living in the town.

Smith, who succeeds David Tennant in the prestigious role, was born in Northampton, but he has inherited his father's love of Rovers.

A Rovers spokesman said: "This is the first we have heard of this but it is exciting news, given the profile and history of the programme.

"If the new Doctor ever wants to come to a game as our guest, I am sure we can find a parking space for his Tardis!"

Darwen has a special link with Doctor who after librarian Graham Groom staged a number of conventions for the show in recent years, which attracted stars past and present.

Mr Groom said: "I'm really looking forward to seeing Matt Smith as the new Doctor Who on Saturday.

"He has a hard act to follow in David Tennant but I'm sure he'll make a good stab at it.

"To learn his family is originally from Darwen is amazing and I wish him every success in his new role."

Rovers also count comedians Jim Bowen and Lee Mack, Justice Secretary Jack Straw, fashion designer Wayne Hemingway and former World Superbike champion Carl Fogarty among their celebrity fans.

Doctor Who begins on BBC One on Saturday at 6.20pm

Nice to know of another celebrity Rovers fan - not many of us!!

Having said that, Catherine Pye looks worth getting to know too

Why should he get special treatment?

He hardly had a word to say about Rovers in his MEN article. Saying that playing for Man United would be a privilege? Wonder what Jack Walker (who refused to sell Shearer to them) would have thought of that?

Calling the likes of Cantona a legend (he's no legend at Blackburn Rovers and he certainly isn't a legendary actor) why should he be welcome at Ewood? Bet its for the Man Utd game as well wondering who he will be supporting since he seems to love them so much.

Sorry, Matt Smith (Doctor Who) wasn’t born in Darwen -he was born in Northampton -he played football for Northampton FC, Notts Forest FC & Leicester City FC youth teams. He is a massive Blackburn Rovers fan because of his family connections-his father was born in Darwen, hence the confusion.
.
I believe one of the future Doctor Who episodes is to go back in time to Liverpool on 14-05-95!

.

Its a fair question why should he get special treatment? Bad enough to pay a tv extortion license fee for a service offering things like his mediocre acting. He shouldn't be getting preferable treatment over all other Rovers supporters as well.

Fame can be fickle, Dr Who comes on tv and announces he is a blue and the club can't get the red carpet and VIP invitation out quick enough.Pity the same can't be offered to that Aussie blue who travelled 10,000 miles recently to see Rovers play.Only for his train to brake down near Rugby and the lad missed the opportunity to see his club play live.If it's good enough for Dr Who, it's good enough for Aussie Blue!.

Great news - the week just gets better and better - especially if he can play a bit!

Timelord and defender of the World.

I would put him up front in our 4-5-1, but no doubt Sam would play him at back - if not in goals...but 'tis not a week to criticise!

Onlyonesimongarner: this article cannot have appeared 'word for word' elsewhere.

As Rovers said when we spoke to them today (paragraph 7): "This is the first we have heard of this but it is exciting news..."

So clearly no blog has done the journalistic work of speaking to Rovers, the BBC, Matt Smith's representatives, Darwen's Doctor Who convention organiser etc.

Yes he is arovers fan and he was born in Darwen. So two great reasons for watching the new series! Plus it adds a new 'dimension' of celebrity fan for the Rovers. Plus maybe he can get us into the Venusian premier league and make Burnley play all their away games on Uranus? Onwards and upwards!

If I came all the way from Australia I wouldn't have risked train travel on the same day! Would have got to Blackburn or as near to Blackburn as possible days in advance in that situation.

Aussie Blue should be offered something if he already hasn't. Not some guy who gets a high profile tv role and all of a sudden he gets vip treatment. He hasn't done anything to deserve it and he should decline the offer unless he pays like most rovers fans would.

Never seen any visual evidence of this but apparently he said so on Sky years ago. He might have wrestled his final match recently (though don't trust wrestling stipulations) so he will have a lot more time on his hands. Maybe he could show up at the next home fixture and give Ferguson and his players some sweet chin music : )

Yes Mr Lamp,

I am sure some of us have Sh1te jobs as you say.

However, what we do have is a grasp on realism, we know what we can get excited about, and also understand, and that is opinions on our beautiful club!!

Please dont forget that football is a working persons game, and everybody is entitled to thier say (please excuse me as a working man i have had a few beers tonight as i have a very important appiontment in Portsmouth on Saturday)

Get a life please man!! I have never really come out to what i do, however you have really pi££ed me off with your post.

I can really pull you on your football knowledge as i have worked in the business for 18 years, i own several properties in Blackburn, Mellor, and RV. I deliver a lot through charity, to our local good causes!!

Also, some of my best mates are at Burnley, Rochdale and Bury.

Football is not all about the big boys, and should never be! Its about passion and breaking down barriers, if you want to be Billy Big time, get your post right as in glass half full!! The rest of your communication sounded negative, but your anology was kind of positive

I am giving you the old Benifit of the doubt, and all due respect NEVER come accross as arich better than person, as people will always be better off than you, and will also have a heart!!

I appologise if i seem harsh, but seen it before.

Oh and i will do a cheap rent on whatever you want until you realise that the majority of people in our beloved town, dont have S££t jobs, they work to live, and should be commended for what they do. Our Beautiful town and surrounding areas would not be what it was without our club, so...........

Not being harsh just being real!!!!!

I am a London-born Rovers supporter who lives along the South Coast and had the opportunity to meet Matt Smith in late 2008 in London as he was then obviously an unknown actor who was in a West End play. We had a brief chat as Matt spotted my Rovers sweatshirt and he was surprised to see a Rovers supporter in the South - he also mentioned that his parents live in Darwen. It was indeed a memorable meeting and I do not believe that one is able to chat with him now as there will be too many Doctor Who fans pushing and shoving for his autograph! I wish Matt all the best as the new Doctor.

Does this article claim to be an 'exclusive'? No. There is no intellectual copyright law on 'news' per se - all news has to be spread from somewhere after all to be classed as news! If a reporter follows up an existing story, writes new copy, gets their own quotes and interviews people for their reaction like Catherine has done then what exactly is the problem? It's hardly plagiarism!

No he actually stated he was a Rovers fan on the One Show & his Dad came from Darwen, so it is straight from the Actors mouth.
