WORRIED villagers are continuing their battle to slow down speeding traffic.

Although Mellor has had no serious accidents, villagers say they do not want to wait until someone has been killed before traffic-calming measures are introduced.

And the villagers and their councillors have pushed Lancashire County Council into carrying out more surveys into traffic coming through the village.

Councillor Charles Warkman, who has battled for many years to make the roads of Mellor safer, said: "Speed has always been a problem in the village and now, with the works at Brownhill roundabout, the situation has become increasingly more serious.

"Everyone seems to want to get through the village as quickly as possible and we are getting much more heavy traffic.

"We don't want to wait until there is an accident. That would be too late."

The villagers recently organised a public meeting and their strength of feeling about the safety of residents was expressed to county highway representatives.

Now the county is taking the first steps towards solving the problem.

A spokesman from Lancashire County Council said: "We will be carrying out traffic counts at both ends of the village - Mellor Brow and Abbott Brow - and we will be looking into plans for resurfacing the road and also traffic management measures.

"We will be reporting back to the police and the Mellor Parish Council within the next few weeks."
