A PEDESTRIAN was fighting for her life today after being knocked down as she crossed a busy main road.

The woman, 32, has not been named by police, suffered serious head injuries in the accident on Preston New Road, Blackburn, near the junction with Montague Street.

She was given emergency treatment by ambulance crews at the scene and was taken to Blackburn Royal Infirmary where her condition was critical.

Police Inspector Stuart Coates said: "She was crossing the road when she was struck by the vehicle which swerved and then struck an oncoming lorry."

The driver of the car, a B-registered Vauxhall Nova SRI, was travelling in the direction of Blackburn town centre when the accident happened at around 7.45am.

The man, who is in his early 20s, was not injured and was being questioned by police.

A taxi driver had to be rescued when his cab overturned in Hall Street, Blackburn, last night.

Ambulance crews gave first aid after the man, who was suspended by his seat belt, was released by firemen.
