MYSTERY surrounds the future of one of Burnley's oldest supermarket stores - as shelves empty and workers worry about their jobs.

Tasker's in Turf Street has operated a cut-price store in Burnley since the 1950s, but now staff are convinced its days are numbered.

The Blackpool-based firm has closed down the large first floor showrooms and the food shelves and freezer sections are emptying fast, with many goods on special cut-price offer.

Last month eight employees lost their jobs and remaining workers say they believe the store will close soon.

But they add they simply cannot get a clear answer from the firm's boss, Mr Barry Sagar, on just when the final axe will fall.

Customers who have supported Tasker's for years are also in the dark.

The firm started life in Burnley with a shop behind the old Palace Theatre in the town centre.

Owner, Mr Cliff Sagar, then moved to the present spacious premises.

Despite several calls to the company's Blackpool head office and to the Burnley store, Mr Barry Sagar was not available for comment.
