COMPLEMENTARY treatments for cancer sufferers in Rossendale will be on offer thanks to the National Lottery.

The hospice in Rossendale applied for the money from the charities board after the East Lancashire Health Authority declined to submit the bid for North West Regional Health Authority funding.

The money will be paid in three stages, £28,227 in the first year, £20,941 in the second and £21.099 in the third.

Chairman of the hospice Dorothy Mitchell said: "We applied for money to make the complementary therapies that are beneficial to patients suffering from cancer available.

"These therapies are not all provided by the NHS although approved by them.

"When someone in the family is ill, even if they are not the breadwinner, the financial strain is felt and paying for private treatments is not always possible."

The money will cover pain relieving treatment for low income residents, general revenue costs, information promotional material and training costs of staff and volunteers.
