A 37-YEAR-OLD man was being quizzed by police today following an alleged arson attack on three flats.

Lighted material was pushed through the letterboxes of the three homes at Westwood Road, Blackburn, early today.

And police and fire officers today said the incident could have been far more serious if a member of the public hadn't raised the alarm after seeing someone acting suspiciously in the area.

During the incident a door to a ground-floor flat was badly damaged and the entrance lobby to the block heavily smokelogged.

Two first floor flats were also targeted during the attack but were not badly damaged. No-one was injured in the incident which happened at 2.45am.

Police arrested a local man shortly afterwards and was taken to Blackburn police station.

"It was only the prompt actions of a member of the public that prevented this from being a far more serious incident," said a police spokesman.
