VILLAGERS marched to the sounds of a brass band when they joined in an annual church walking day.

The community turned out in force to take part in the St Leonard's Church, Balderstone, walking and fun day.

Balderstone Brass Band led the procession on the half-hour walk from the Fielding's Arm pub to St Leonard's Church.

And youngsters rode in style aboard a decorated float pulled by a tractor.

Back at the church, an energetic afternoon of sports, including various races and a dads versus lads football match was enjoyed with free tea and sandwiches for all.

Rev David Ashforth said: "This is a throwback to the old Whit walks and it's great to see these old traditions are very much alive in East Lancashire.

"The event isn't a fund-raiser, it is just a chance for the community to get together and enjoy themselves."
