SOME of Britain's finest young singers competed in a contest held in memory of famed Blackburn contralto Kathleen Ferrier.

A group of 16 first-year undergraduate music students from Britain's top colleges, gathered at King George's Hall for the first ever Kathleen Ferrier Bursary competition.

The event was held by the Blackburn branch of the Kathleen Ferrier Society.

After a full day of performances, Elliot Goldie from the Guildhall School of Music and Dance in London, was chosen as the winner.

Organiser Sylvia Alexander said: "Elliot will receive £3,000 over the next three years to help him with his musical studies.'
