ARTIST Anthony Collins is hoping his paintings will persuade people to sign a petition to preserve St James Spire and the Peace Gardens in Burnley.

Together with Sylvia Carthy, both of the Brunshaw area, Anthony has already collected more than 1,000 signatures on a petition.

They are trying to get Burnley Council to reverse its decision to demolish the spire and gardens and redevelop the area for car parking as part of the Curzon Street development.

Anthony said: "From an artist's point of view this area of Burnley is an inspiration. I have been sitting there for years and they did a good job leaving the spire and making the gardens.

"The peace in this area gives people relief from the busy town centre.

"I may not be able to change their minds, but at least I would have made them aware of how the public feel before it is too late."

He will presenting the petition to Burnley Council.
