FYLDE crowds braved bad weather yesterday (May 29) in true Blackpool style to support GMTV's Get up and Give charity event.

Stars from the morning show visited the resort's World of Coronation Street in a party atmosphere as part of a national tour to raise cash for six charities.

Hundreds of Fylde folk descended on the promenade to catch a glimpse of Anthea Turner and Mr Motivator from GMTV, along with Darren Day and the stars from Coronation Street.

Many local faces appeared on screen as the show was broadcast live across the nation on ITV yesterday morning.

A GMTV spokesperson said: "We had a fantastic day with a great atmosphere and lots of people.

"The event gets bigger and bigger and Blackpool was particularly special as the Coronation Street stars came out in force to support us.

"Giving to the charities was huge here. The town did us proud."

Radio Wave also found the event a great success, according to managing director John Barnett, who said: "The morning was brilliant. The station got a lot of coverage on national TV and our simultaneous broadcast with GMTV went very well.

"So many listeners came down to take part in the charity event - it was wonderful."

Mike Chadwick of Blackpool Borough Council's tourism department said: "It was one of the best morning shows. It was incredibly entertaining, very popular and great publicity for Blackpool."
