FINAL arrangements are now being made by police for the forthcoming firearms amnesty which begins next week.
Lancashire Constabulary's Chief Assistant Constable John Vine welcomed the amnesty which will run from Monday, June 3 until Sunday, June 30.
He said: "Every weapon given up is one that cannot be used by criminals.
"We know from all too tragic experience that when firearms fall into the wrong hands the consequences can be terrible."
People who hand in illegally held guns will not be prosecuted for unlawful possession under the Firearms Act 1968.
But Mr Vine stressed: "If weapons are thought to have been used in crime, the police will pursue their normal enquiries."
Leaflets explaining how to take part in the amnesty are now available in police stations, libraries and the Citizens' Advice Bureau. Anyone wanting to give anonymous information about illegally held firearms or gun-related crimes can call Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
