A POLICE constable who risked his life to rescue a teenager from a blazing car has had his bravery rewarded.
PC Abid Khan received the Roland Cree McGowan Cup at Bacup police station.
The cup is presented annually at Bacup police station as a recognition of bravery in memory of PC McGowan, who was killed on duty in a road accident in 1978.
PC Khan was on patrol in Haslingden town centre when he saw a car being driven the wrong way down one-way Regent Street. The car turned on to Manchester Road, near the police station, when it mounted the pavement, demolished a street light, embedded itself into a bus shelter and burst into flames.
PC Khan called the fire brigade and ambulance and ran to the burning wreckage, where the 17-year-old youth was shouting for help.
He reached through the window, dragged the teenager out and had just managed to reach his police car when the Cavalier exploded. The car turned out to be stolen.
