STEER clear of overhead power lines and the canals is the holiday warning from NORWEB and the police.

With school holidays here there is a higher risk of injury or death to children through interference with power lines and substations or swimming in the canals and Flash.

Kite and model plane fliers, fishermen, sailors and tree pruners are advised to look up and look out for dangers.

A NORWEB spokesman said:"Be sure to check the area is free from overhead lines. Be particularly alert in unfamiliar situations and if in doubt seek advice from NORWEB or the local electricity company if you are away from home.

"Everyone should keep well clear of equipment carrying the 'Danger of Death' sign. NORWEB's equipment is designed and installed to the highest standards laid down by law and is perfectly safe if left alone."

NORWEB is asking people to contact them or Police if they notice anyone behaving suspiciously near substations or power lines.

And Supt Malcolm Howells urged everyone to have a happy and safe holiday.

"No-one wants to see our children unnecessarily restricted in their play. But we all have a reponsibility, as parents and concerned adults, to ensure that the children are protected from these and other places where they play.

"They should be discouraged from swimming in the canals and Flash. And I firmly support the warning from NORWEB."
