ENGLAND hero Chris Waddle arrived at Turf Moor this week determined to put the Clarets back on the path to glory.

The ex-international star was paraded in front of delighted fans who gathered at the stadium to greet him on Tuesday morning.

Waddle, who takes over as player-manager, told a press conference: "Burnley is a big club and should at least be in the first division. You look at the stadium and it could hold its own in the premier league."

He added: "From a young age I've always admired Burnley, the success they have had and the support they generate.

"I think you must make decisions on gut feelings, and I definitely had the right feeling when this job came up."

His first move was to appoint his assistant manager, Glen Roeder, a former team-mate who has been on England's coaching staff, and the pair immediately began to plan for promotion.

"We haven't spent any time before today in the second division, but already it's been a day too long," said Roeder.

"We are here to get out of this division. Chris has told me he is here to try to win promotion this year."

Waddle, 36, is free from injury and plans to play as much as possible this season. He says he knows there are not going to be vast sums of money to spend on players, and he will start by giving the current squad the chance to prove themselves.

"You don't just go around signing cheques all the time," he said. "I'll look at the staff we've got and go from there."

Chairman Frank Teasdale, who admitted the two weeks since Adrian Heath's resignation had been "horrendous," said he and the new manager had spoken briefly about transfers.

"The current players have got to believe that they have got a chance under the new management," he said. "Whatever happens it will be done very profess- ionally."

Roeder warned: "We'll find out if the players want to be winners. If they don't, they'll be dropped off and they can hitch a ride somewhere else. We don't want anyone who is just here to pick up their wages."
