A FEW years ago, one Friday, I was buying some garden peas from Pam's Pantry at Brierfield.

I asked if they were sweet and was told they were. As I was well known there, I jokingly said if they were not sweet, I would throw a brick through the window.

The night after, the window was broken by someone who reached on to some side shelves and stole some cigarettes. I should have learned a lesson here, but within a couple of weeks, I went into Wilkinson's hi-fi shop in Nelson and bought some earphones.

I was assured they were really good and I again jokingly said if they weren't, I would throw a brick through the window.

The following Sunday, someone broke the glass in the door and stole some electronic goods. They were caught within the hour.

In both cases, it was as well that I was well known to both these shopkeepers.

ALBERT MORRIS, Clement View, Nelson.
