LITTER louts are ruining a popular footpath and angering local residents by dumping wrappers and drinks cans.

Now people living in and near Hereford Road, Colne, are backing demands for a clean-up campaign involving Pendle Council, Railtrack and nearby high schools. The path along the Nelson-Colne railway line next to Hereford Road is well used by dog owners and students from Primet, Fisher-More and Walton high schools.

Last year a similar litter problem was solved by a council crackdown. Now the problem has re-appeared and residents are again demanding action to tidy up the area.

Herta Goodall, who lives nearby, said: "It's terrible. There's a lot of people complaining about it but nobody does anything.

"I keep telling them to get on to the council and then perhaps the area will be cleaned up.

"Dog owners get a lot of stick but nobody says anything about litter."

Mrs Goodall believes the main culprits are from Fisher-More although the school denied it when she complained.

The residents are backed by local councillor Tim Ormrod who wrote to the council's cleansing department to highlight the problem.

"I strongly believe in getting to children at a young enough age to develop good social behaviour," he said.

"An integrated clean-up would be one step in tackling litter and its causes."
