A BABY'S crying in the night saved a family when fire started in the bathroom.

The young parents were asleep in bed at their home in Every Street, Nelson. when they were awakened by the baby's cries at 3.30am.

When they got up to attend to the tot they found smoke and flames coming from the bathroom.

They picked up the baby, shut the bathroom door and went downstairs to raise the alarm.

Sub Officer John Pinner said: "They were lucky. If they had not got up to attend to the baby the fire could easily have spread with possible severe results.''

He said the blaze was caused by a cigarette falling into the glassfibre bath.

He said: "I have seen this happen before and once it takes hold it burns quickly.''

He said flames were prevented from spreading into the rest of the house as a result of the door being closed.

The family, who have only recently moved to Nelson from Bradford, spent the rest of the night at another house.
