ALMOST 60 possible sites for recycling bins have been put forward by councillors as part of a scheme to turn Pendle "greener."

Pendle Council is looking at options to increase the number of sites where householders can dump glass and waste paper in skips ready for recycling. The aim is to provide one convenient recycling dump for every 750 houses in the borough.

If all the sites are taken up it would boost the number of sites in Pendle from nine to 56 but the number and location of the chosen sites will depend on cash and their spread across the area.

A report to the council's various area committees which meet next week says: "This is not only to try and meet the Government's waste reduction targets but to reduce our reliance on raw materials and to increase environmental awareness and respect for the environment and contribute to sustainable development."

But some of the proposed sites are likely to run into opposition from residents.
