THE last game PNE played in February 1938 was at Deepdale against local rivals Bolton Wanderers.

North End recalled George Mutch after being rested for the Stoke game.

Bolton included Harry Hobbick at full back, who was to be the PNE trainer 30-odd years later.

Preston drew first blood in the 12th minute, when Wanderers goalkeeper Hanson gifted a goal to Mutch after mishandling an easy looking lob from Jimmy Milne.

With just 36 minutes played North End doubled their lead, again through Mutch, with Hanson once again being at fault.

Within a couple of minutes, however, Bolton pulled a goal back when Anderson played a one-two with Woodward and scored with ease.

After half-time Bolton put up a spirited display, catching North End out with just three minutes left to equalise for the second time.

Result 2-2, att: 29,335.

THE following Saturday was a big day for the club as a win against Brentford at Griffin Park would put North End into the FA Cup semi-finals for the second year running.

Brentford, who had beaten Manchester United in the previous round, had been the league leaders for much of the season but had just lost three consecutive league games.

Preston lost the toss but won everything else, including many new admirers as Brentford were outclassed.

Bobbie Beattie was man of the match, showing exquisite ball control and good vision in his passing ability.

It was Beattie who opened the scoring in the 20th minute, controlling the ball and dodging skilfully between two defenders before firing a left-foot shot past Crozier.

Within three minutes Beattie had doubled North End's lead, but unlike the derby match with Bolton they did not let their opponents back into the game.

Hugh O'Donnell's goal late in the game ensured that cultured Preston North End were in the FA Cup semi-finals for the eighth time.
