JIMMY McIlroy , one of only two former Burnley players named among the 100 League legends, today welcomed the honour saying: "It's nice to be remembered."

But McIlroy - long since a legend at Turf Moor - admits he was surprised at some of the players who had been omitted.

The 100 greats were compiled by a panel of journalists and those still alive will be honoured during the season - the 100th in the history of the Football League.

"It certainly doesn't do the old ego any harm but you can't take these things too seriously, they are only opinions," said the 66-year-old McIlroy, a former sportswriter for the Lancashire Evening Telegraph.

"I am surprised that Jimmy Adamson isn't on it, or Bryan Douglas and Ronnie Clayton. There are a lot of players I rated very highly who have been overlooked."

Tommy Lawton is the other former Turf Moor player named.
