A MEMBER of an East Lancashire band who played at the opening ceremony for the controversial 'Angel Of The North' monument in Gateshead says it would be 'wonderful' if a similar sculpture was built on a Rossendale hilltop.

Councillors are backing plans to celebrate the millennium and suggestions include a huge monument similar the 'Angel of the North' on top of Musbury Tor, Helmshore.

Bob Atkinson, a member of Rossendale Valley band Brassanova, who performed at the official opening ceremony, said: "Our band plays a quite a few professional and amateur concerts. But the ceremony for the 'Angel Of The North' was a really wonderful occasion.

Bob, who plays in the world music band alongside three Waterfoot musicians, said: "The sculpture itself is one of the best things I have ever seen in my life."

Rossendale residents have gathered almost 1,000 signatures on a petition opposing the plans.

The original idea for the sculpture came from local churches, who wanted to see a cross or some other kind of religious landmark.

Arthur Marriot, Rossendale Borough Council's leisure officer, said: "The special projects for the millennium are all about artists working with local people to create a work of art.

"We may not even be successful in getting the money, and we will have to consider the feelings of local people before any decision to go ahead."

Many local residents feel any money available would be better spent on a community centre or facilities for young people.
