EAST Lancashire families were living in fear of debt-collecting "heavies" kicking their door in, it was claimed.

Pay-up-or-else letters, dubbed "frightening", were being investigated by consumer watchdogs. Householders were being put on alert after ground rent circulars were set out by two companies.

Trading standards officers warned families to consult a solicitor if they received the letters.
